Houlgate G.W.F Hegel The Phenomenology of The Spirit

1. consciouness-assumption since the contents of consciousness are "universal" they must be publicly graspable others as well.
self-conciousness-requires one's awareness of oneself as a subject; recognition from others.
desire-makes us human, a grasp and negatively explained as "desire-for" and owns possessed loses it's 'desirability'
2. This reminds me of the ability things are interpret things and the views and manifestations that are formed within these views. The very existance and concious to see if this person is realized and his presence is known. Similar to Kiekagaards "I know I only exist", this similar in a way that others must recognize the prescense of this 'person' for example in a classroom, contradicting Kiekegaards believes.
3. Sensory Certainity-self-knowing spirit or "absolute knowing"
Absolute knowing-how shapes of consciousness nessarily transforms itself
4. "This, there, now", "Many, nows, many heres"
Do have knowledge of those and is part of our history. Dealing with the past and the timeline forming contradictory views with perception as the key.
5. "Perception ceases, and becomes understanding"
Perception distinguishes between the mainfold character and the inner unity of the object. Ceases to be mere perception and becomes understanding, "understanding with relation with yourself". Understanding is also self-conscious that finds the qualities of the inner object.
6. pg 13 "unity of the one with itself"
Self conscious is desire. Which means accomplishing and uniting with yourself. Enjoying the 'object; and enjoying ourselves.
7. pg 15
Other self-conscious as recognizing oneself as a self conscious subject. Between subjects, shapes, of "spirit itself". "Seeing the other is his or her recognition of my identity."
8. Mutual recognition is unsustainable. "Recognition is always embedded in a destabilizing tensions..on sided recognition." Self-consciousness is mutual recognition rather than conflict.
9. Intersubjectivities pg 18
"If social life is to fulfill its purpose and enable us to become conscious of ourselves in relation to what is other than us, nothing but mutual recognition". Over there-->losing oneself
10. pg 19
Hard to resist others. Mutual agreement is where one holds an ideal and accompliance for each and recognize their cooperation and the presence for mutuality. Acceptance of self-conscious and cooperation.

Universe in this paper personal view+discussion notes

My Perspective
The piece of paper is the whole universe because every particle and emptiness forms a basis of how the universe looks like. The piece of paper is white,  nothing but white, and just looking at it forms a stare, black look in your face. The universe is that exact same think filled with void and infinite space, the paper in a way compares to it. When you start writing on it or drawing a picture of the empty paper, "life" is finally created and the paper is not empty anymore. Staring at the paper though is like staring at the sky, feeling isolated and confused of your existence and the vast confusion the eyes create.

Discussion over  paper
Another way to approach this situation is to the say the paper connects back to its sources and how this piece of paper was created. In class today, we discussed how this piece of paper is taken from a tree, which is part of the environment, which flourishes by the rich nutrients of the soil and water poured down from the clouds. Also, the logger who has to cut the tree down and manufacture and produce this piece of paper we have now. In conclusion, it forms a series of connections sourcing back to the Earth that provides for the tree and shelters it, which leads back to the solar system which shelters the Earth and providing warmth and light from the Sun which brings the ecosystems to life.

Existence and Subjectivity
To make a long story short, the consciousness-->self consciousness
[Through recognition of self through mutual recognition. Desire]

Hegel Notes

-"Phenomenology" coined by the German scientist and mathematician J.H Lambert.
-His phenomenology way to determine the "validity and limitations" of "principles of sensibility" different to conceptual thought.
-leading to a "critique of pure reason"
-never used the term because of the important changes of publishing
-phenomenology- study of phenomenon
-phenomenology of spirit-type of prophetical rather than exercise in it
-compared to Bildungsroman (educational novel) bearer of an evolving series of "shapes of consciousness"
- like an account of interlinked forms of social existence and thought
-when Kant showed the idea of phenomenological prophetical to Lambert, he himself still believed its the project of a purely conceptual metaphysics achievable by the use of the regressive or "analytic method"
-came to dismiss as illusory
-development of a type of social existence which enables a unique form of rationality, replaced by a system to rational self-correction.
-Hegel's terminology are "mediated". Mental representations he calls "intuitions" are "blind"
-nature of conciousness cannot be as originally thought: some implicit universal aspect to them.
-Perception: perceptional realism in which any individuals idiosyncratic private apprehension.
-always been something positive that has been learned in such processes.
-internal contradictions generated a new shape, perception, collapse of any give altitude
-"the understanding"-shape which he identifies with scientific cognition. They are "contradictory"
-self-consciousness. Hegel's notion of "spirit".
-capacity to be "conscious" requires reflexivity of "self-consciousness" awareness of oneself presented as known. recognition "objective spirit"
- further trace the learning path of self-consciousness through the process of "reason" before objective spirit can become the explicit subject matter of spirit.
-social life ordered by customs
-culture-"world of self-alienated spirit"
-not only interact, but collectively created relativity enduring cultural practices.
-revisionists-see Hegel as furthering the Kantian critique
-The standpoint of scenery commission is the science of logic.

Digital Nation Notes

-"Reaching through the other side of the screen as it is another place" Games give people an extraordinary way of life and virtual world where you can be a king for example and be anything in any form or possibility unimaginable."

-Unlike internet, you are not alone. Do virtual worlds really bring people together even if your alone on your computer acting like your your not alone?
- Shifting internal meetings to virtual meetings. Millions of dollars in actual meetings flying over to places. Saving money on travel.
- Able to meet people. "Be at the office while at home"
-"Immersion in the environment-more engaging, change the way of communication"
-Ghost town forms in an building where people work but are in the virtual world. Office buildings decrease in attendance and a approach to migration to the virtual world has been steadily leading to this.
-Real/Virtual: blurred. "Avatar wearing real life face"
- Persistent exists in virtual life carried over in real life.
- 50% believe in physical space they swam with whales. "Wonderful not so wonderful ways"
- Undoubtedly where we are going. Leading edge-U.S military
-Virtual reality therapy-stress over years of piloting in Iraq posture will change. Emotion tension, sweat, and anxiety created between veterans involved in real life war engagement. Over-time brain is uncomfortable but realizes the situation and stress is relieved.
-Technology opens up new frontiers and new questions that will be answered. War: physical or virtual?
-pilots execute missions in Iraq. Airman wear air suits when thousands of miles away. Really fighting a war. Rewriting the rules of the game. Costless to the players and benefits how war is done. Extraordinary precision with no American loss. Drones are increasing in production with a high demand from the pentagon in today's war.
-Creates different latitudes between what is truly done.
-Physically located there but in the mind set really in the fight.
-No way to really tell of the consequences only the bomb. U.S+NATO don't track civilians.Preparation and prevention is the key in these types of conflicts.
-"Going to war"-life in danger. Sitting behind the computer screen shooting and going back home and living your life. "At home and at war". Drone pilots under stress over reality and fiction.
-Young recruiters and airman play video games to prepare for these situations. "Technology generation"
-"Why do pushups if you preparing yourself to sit on your but all day and use the computer?"
- The Army Experience: for kids 13 and older, another way of recruiting by playing video games.
-Apple: Testing technology. War: protecting and serving your country even to kill to accomplish your duty
-"War is not a game"-virtual war and the real world.
-Games: engaging, learning experience. Tension deficit disorder?
-"Life simply moves on-what will we hold on?"

Final Thoughts:
Digital nation has truly opened my eyes and realize that our generation and future generations will continue to live and depend on technology. Our dependency on technology in any form has both increased and diminished our processes of thought. These "virtual meetings" and requiring to force to use technology in any way decreases real life interaction. We done realize we are simply staring and talking to a pix-elated screen engaging in a conversation in a room by yourself. The approach toward technology in our life has truly made us lazy and simply looking for an easy and more efficient way to get things done. In the past, society was never like this. In forms of transportation and getting work done, society was willing to wait and have patience accepting the hardships and challenges. Today's society has completely shifted and transformed into a fast-paced urbanized direction "reaching for the stars" and moving on looking for ways to get things done evn faster. Even with today's technology, society is still looking for ways to get done even faster and the demand of technology has increased exponentially. The news is a perfect example on how society views events in the world. One second you have a murder or earthquake killing thousands, and then suddenly it shifts to a celebrity pop culture news. This here shows how we simply hear and forget and how news are not as deep than it was in the past where someone actually picked up a newspaper and the took the time to show the remorse of the deceased and tragic event.
Lastly, my final thoughts on the connection between video games and war simply shocks me. War is meant to travel to the enemy country and engage in combat. Sitting on a computer and killing people is not war and this concept should certainty not be leading in this direction. This teaches how video games especially shooting and killing games will lead you to war environments and changing the minds of future recruits how its all just a game and it means nothing because you have the thought of "lifes" in the game. The joy of gamers playing these games will soon be shifted into real life situations and the thrill they have will never be the same for people who simply want to pass the time. Perspectives changes between games and real life, something that the military should avoid. The human capability to deal with the stress and instability of this leads to confusion and if nothing really is happening. This ruins the purpose of what war truly is and the feeling created will be lost and the dedication and thrive of victory will certainty feel like nothing if you are home after supposedly "fighting an enemy on your computer". The military, jobs, and schooling as it looks will be living in a virtual world if this supposed "change" is what the world truly wants.

Nietzche CON'T

Discussion Notes:

-Christian name but not following the laws
-no conditions toward: philosophy of love
-christian love-Islamic civilization. Arguably a tradition: fatherly love, not kill
-Nietzsche: love for others not just yourself
-concerned about yourself, giving your own desires to someone close and sacrificial and giving to others: waiting for the after life: humble, human will.
-takes away the human will.
ex Karen:"you should have a lot of ambition, you should achieve in pleasing God; makes you better than that person."
-righteousness-correct, for living the world religion. Marx "religion is like opium to the people, you don't try but you accept it"
-poorer people change through religion in their lives.
-lower class uniting them; (Christianity, Buddhism)=faith, true salvation
-Using God-the elite (Marx's society: no religion)
-slave morality rational: eye of a need-easier for a camel to go through than for a rich man to go to heaven.
-will to power-elite buying into the 'slave morality'
-we are sinners. wealthy and powerful=guilt
-Apollonian
-organs are in conflict with each other
-impulse to the point: passion, create your own reality
-will to power change=affected
-doesn't create progress some type of order or structure
-creating your own. depends on location-matter of choice
-primal will is restricted to choice
-so many people are named in a relying but don't act upon it
-will of power in a form to seek authority relationship with another person, acting on that idea
-self-motivation, power is an ambiguous word. Exchange working all the way to the top

Final thoughts:
'“God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him!” Now if God is dead, he must have been alive once'
It is not impossible to believe God, but God is dead. Nietszche leans forward to atheism to how he describes religion, and ends it with that.

Nietzshe Discussion Notes

“Has it ever been really noted [observed Nietzsche] to what extent a genuinely religious life…of self-examination…requires a leisure class…I mean leisure with a good conscience…And that consequently our modern, noisy, time-consuming industriousness, proud of itself, stupidly proud, educates and prepares people more than anything else does, precisely for ‘unbelief.’”  (NYPL)

In class we discussed this quote by Nietzsche. A few points on him not discussed was he was a "rebel against Christianity". He stated that "In truth, there was only one Christian, and he died on the cross". He concludes that its one immortal blemish of mankind.

Nietzsche notes:

-passion and control. No conscious at birth but at Buddhism.
-compassion: life is suffering, returns to help others
-primal will-choice "you choose to be born" will to survive
-Plato: "forms in our mind, but loses it"
-human being has a choice at birth
-child's will-individual self acclimation, acceptance for oneself. Decisions "I'll win myself to..."
-cannot isolate the will. Automatic cannot control or process
-what motivates us? Will us to action?
-affirmation and doubt living with our consequences
- alarm clock is the test-the will
- "creation and destruction" why is that the primal will? Life and death
-sensory needs- death is walking next to us, Celebrate the chance you have to live
-consciousness arises out of necessary requirement. Understanding the power struggles. Chaos that is man.
-what is everyone seeking? Elevation either master or slave
-creative class now-those who run society incorporates who has a position in society or the "elites"
-Power=every relation we have, interaction. Seek in elevated position. Out achieve in other humans. Will to gain power in all situations.
- Will as motivated by power. Done almost all the time unconsciously
-Take over other societies by any means such as economically, politically, etc.
-all things in nature competing for sunlight. Animals for resources and foods.
-Existence of will-compete with all living things and dominance

Digital Nation Notes/discussion

Important points:

-Human being changing because of Technology
-The brain is loosely focused. Inability to focus on one thing. Lack of attentiveness
-Takes a while to focus and pay attention and stop the behaviors. Addiction vs. Digital revolution
-playing for 50hrs without food or exercise has led to possible deaths
-Distraction: high
-inventing new ways of teaching-the best way
-transition from oral to written culture has not been fully achieved
-The loss of gain. 1960s- reality overload
-increased technology use-health issues such as ear complications and eye strains
-digital revolution- fast paced and swiftness led to human decline mentally and physically
-inability to adapt and constant connection
-"ethics and internet etiquette first then technical side"

"Spending the majority of time in the virtual world is your reality"

Discussion Notes

-Technology increasing at a exponential rate. Society is progressing but the resources are running out
-Technology significantly increasing but at what cost? Progression=Regression
-Technology approaches:
1. Life is easy
2. Capitalism
-Email is not enough or a form of communication. No feeling or sympathy towards it not displayed in the words.
-severe addiction to phones
examples:
"GPS failures in navigation and the uncertaintly of it"
"Consistent phone use and texting popularly used toward female engagement"

Final Comment: Is this increase in technology going to fast that we aren't thinking of what we already accomplished?

Hume Attack

How I would've attacked:

For the example of the sun rising, Hume in the argument over how the sun will rise would attack by showing how humans are unjustified in making predictions of the future based on past occurrences.
He assumes that sun will rise every day, like any other day, but there is no basis of actual prove to lead to this conclusion.
By claiming that the sun will rise tomorrow according to Hume he neither agrees nor disagrees. Hume illustrates that “the contrary of every matter of fact is still possible, because it can never imply a contradiction and is conceived by the mind with the same facility and distinctness as if ever so conformable to reality”.
Just because the sun has risen in the past that we can lead to this possibility. Hume felt that all reasoning concerning matter of fact seemed to be founded on the relation between cause and effect.

Conclusion: "You see light, you feel heat". The sun will not likely rise due to uncertainty and little prove.

Descartes Description

Descartes did not believe that the information we receive through our senses is necessarily accurate. Descartes undertook his own rebirth in society. He cleaned himself by throwing out everything he knew and sorting out every thought.
Through this cleansing and reconstruction of this thoughts, Descartes felt it would be a waste of time to tear down each idea one by one so he attacked it by importance: "the idea that sense perception conveys accurate information."
In his Dream argument, Descartes argues that he often dreams of things that seem real to him while he is asleep. In his realitity vs. concious, he provides an example where he feels the fire and how it doesn’t really allow him to tell when he is awake and when he is dreaming in perception and view.
He also proposed that scientific observation had to be an interpretive act requiring careful monitoring.
In Rules for the "Direction of the Mind", Descartes argues that all problems should be broken up into their simplest parts and that problems can be expressed as abstract equations.
This point led to express mathematics and algebra in geometric forms and simply to symbols and signs. Lastly, he developed a method to understanding the properties of objects by simplifying their shapes to formula and approaching them through reason rather then sense.

Important points:
1. Descartes' conviction that sensation and imagination are not reliable sources of knowledge. Only understanding or reason can be trusted.
2. Free will
3."If we saw clearly that it is bad, we could not possibly sin -- not so long as we did see it in this way"
